How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Evaluation question 4 - How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

There were a vast variety of media technologies used in order to create my media documentary. First and foremost the planning needed to create such a mammoth task such as a investigatave documentary was on a broad scale. Then after planning i had to consider how would construct something like this. This is a list of all the programs and equipment i used and how they helped in creating the documentary and the ancillary texts.

Apple Mac - I needed an apple mac computer access all the programs and the fine editing skills i needed to create all my A2 coursework. The Apple Macs really help as they contain a very professional and consistant program selection.

Adobe Premier Pro - Adobe Premier Pro was a key program in the creation of my documentary as it was where all the editing and laying out of the documentary took place. I used premier pro as it has a vast variety of audio and visual transitions and a large amount of effects which can help make an ok documentary into a great one. I also used this program to create and edit my radio trailer, as i felt that with all the editing skills on there it would help as well.
Adobe In-Design - I used In-design in order to create my tv listings. I used this as in-design has a great array of editing still images and you can also Bevel or Emboss certain factors which again help to make certain parts stand out. Also i used the same program for my magazine peice, showing that i had already had expeiriance with the program itself.Blogger - I used Blogger in order to keep track of my progress throughout the course but also to allow other people to view my work and comment on whether they think it is good or hat can be done to improve it. Thankfully my work has recieved mostly positive reviews with hardly any criticism's.Google - I used google as one of the key points for my research, as google is practically linked with everything on the internet. I was able to find many websites on underage binge drinking but also on how to make a successful documentary.

Celtex - I used the free downloadable software called celtex to create an electronic storyboard of my documentary. I was able to draw out my storyboard on paper and yhen upload the images into celtex and explain the lighting and such from there. It was an excellent program and really helped me to plan out my documentary.

Digital Video Camera (HVR-A1E/A1P) - This was the camera i used to shoot all of my footage. Most of the footage shot was when the camera was on a tripod, however some was free held.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

From the feedback I have received, I generally feel that the documentary has turned out to be a great success, receiving great reviews from the target audience in which I set out for. Many stated that the overall out look of the documentary looked very professional and that the camera angles and the way the voice over’s and editing were conducted went very well with the documentary.

Going from this comment, it seems that my in-depth research has paid off and he has also provided me with advice as to how I could improve further upon the audio of the documentary. However from this comment it seems that he is impressed with the views of both the medical expert and in contrast the authentic Pub Landlord himself. On the technical side he also felt that the varied camera shots and the clearly presented narrative were also key in the success of the documentary.

India Cox has also said some of the main points that came across from a lot of people, stating how the documentary was well set out. However she also highlighted how the live footage from the pubs and from Dartford Town Centre was also extremely effective.

I feel if I was to create a documentary of something with such a broad impact on society I would have taken the same steps with research but allowed more time and more planning for the structure and overall development of the documentary itself. I would also have preferred to have been able to work on the overall audio of the documentary as well, as I can see the logic in Mr Schock’s comment.

Shot List - Under Age and Under Pressure

My shot list is as follows:

Title sequence - I used an image of some young people drinking and posing for the camera looking slightly aggressive. I took this image and manipulated it three times to make it look like it is morphing in to the vision of some incapacitated by alcohol.

Introduction from me - I decided to bring in an introduction from me to begin to explain what i had and what i was about to go through during the course of the documentary. I proceeded to explain how i was going over to Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford to speak to a Ambulance Operations Manager on the issue of Binge Drinking.

Ambulance Driving Away - I decided to film the ambulance driving out of the hospital in order to reflect the professionalism of the shot and also to link my introduction to the interview about to follow. I also used a voice over in this shot in order to help progress it further.

Question One (Ambulance) - This is a shot which shows the answer to the question i asked Heather Ransom. It then links into a clip of under age people drinking in a pub. (Original Footage).

Dartford Street Scene - I used this shot to link another part of the documentary with the police interview. I also used this shot to show my skills with the camera as well as with premier pro's editing tools. I again used a voice over during this part of the documentary.

Question One (Police) - This is a shot of the question i asked the police on trouble and disorder with under-age drinkers. Again i linked this with a shot of Underage people drinking.

Kent Police and Leigh Tech School - I Linked both these shots together in order to form one shot with a voice over. This was so to maintain a consistent and professional flow to the documentary.

Multi-screen Shot - Here i used 8 seperate shots and interlinked them in order to create an overwhelming effect of people admitting to binge drinking, all of whom were still at school. I believe this had a very powerful effect. I then followed this with a blank black screen with an audio voice over to again enforce my point.

Walking Into Dartford - This is just a shot to link me in with my Interview with an ex pub landlord. Again supported with a voice over.

Question One (Pub) - This is a shot of me with an ex pub landlord talking about how binge drinking has changed and how youngsters are influenced and effected. It is again linked with original footage from me of the aftermath of a fight in Dartford Town Center, which emphasizes both points.

Question Two (Ambulance) - Again a shot leading to another question and answer from heather ransom with shots from around the hospital, and then ending with her answering a question from me. Again halfway through the interview there is another shot from Dartford where some one is on the floor outside a bar receiving medical attention.

Police And Ambulance Contracts and E-mails - Under Age and Under Pressure

When creating the documentary it was clear from the beginning that i had to get a professional point of view on Under age drinking, and the Police and Ambulance services were a must, as well as a Pub Landlord, or Ex-Pub Landlord. Here i have evidence of contacting the police with e-mails, as well as receiving a letter from the media officer at Kent Police with a contract attached which i had to sign and hand over for the interview to take place, ensuring i would only be using the interview for school work.

With the ambulance service, the majority of the communication was made over the phone, with ambulance operations manager of the borough of Bexely - Heather Ransom. No e-mails were exchanged however my school did receive a letter from Heather, commending me on my professionalism.

With the Ex-Pub Landlord, I simply asked my Grandad if he was willing to be interviewed and he was.

Documentary Advertising - Under Age and Under Pressure

The advertising part of the documentary is also a very crucial part. I decided to go for trailers as well as the general advertisements in magazines, newspapers and billboards, as well as online advertisement aswell.

Analysis of two other Documentaries

To make a good documentary i felt it a necessity to have a look at other documentaries, how they were created and what made them so successful. I alalyzed these two documentaries in great detail and have posted the images on here.

Institutional Information - Under Age and Under Pressure

When creating a documentary it is important to consider what channels you plan to broadcast on and at what time to achieve a maximum impact. I decided to choose to air my show on BBC1 for a variety of reasons. Firstly, due to the fact that every TV has the ability to be able to air that channel, therefore you immediately have an upper hand over other channels such as SkyOne and such. Secondly, Due to the fact that the BBC leaves it's programs un-interrupted by adverts, therefore the full effect of the documentary could be seen. Lastly, the fact that the BBC itself incorporates all of its programs onto the internet after being shown via the Iplayer facility really helps to get the documentary across and continuously viewed for what could be another month later. A feature that would probably help with the playing in Schools and such.

Where will your media text be shown?

I hope for my documentary to be shown on BBC 1, where it would be aired at just after 9pm, to escape the limiting watershed. This time would be great for my documentary as it would allow it to reveal the full and honest extent of the damage that under-aged drinking could do and yet the true British feel it brings to the streets of a sub-urban town. I also feel by being able to divulge into the world of underage drinking and being amongst the mindset on today’s ‘ASBO Culture’ I will be able to show more than the problem of underage drinking, but perhaps unearth problems with the society in which we live in. This adverse effect that I hope to create could perhaps entice more viewers towards the show.

Release dates?

I hope for it to be released around April 2010 as it will highlight these problems before the upcoming summer holidays, but with still giving them enough time to do something about it. By doing this, Local community’s, Police forces and more importantly Parents will become more wise about where there children's ‘pocket money’ does end up, and what they can do to prevent it.

Available over the internet?

Being aired on the BBC my documentary will almost instantly be available on BBC Iplayer and will be more easily accessible for viewers who missed the show but wish to watch it at work or on trains home etc. This modern attraction will again draw much more attention and will also provide easier access for the program to be shown at schools and in meetings.

Due to its educational value, will it be made available to schools and if so, how?

Yes, it would be given to schools upon request and hopefully shown in life skills/ citizenship classes Or the Classes will be able to Access the program Online.

Target Audience - Under Age and Under Pressure

As with all media productions, a target audience is always a certainty and must be considered, as choosing the right target audience could have a big impact. However, the topic of underage drinking was that of a luxurious decision, allowing me to work towards a very vast and broad target audience instead of just specifically filming towards one. However, my main targets proved to be teenagers from 13 onwards, and all parents and figures of authority. I feel with such a strong subject it was important to get the messages from my documentary to all of these people.

When writing my 'Target Audience' Plan, i said:

"My target audience consists of a wide variety of generations and also different types of people. My documentary includes information relevant for ages up to 70 downwards to approximately 14 or even younger. My documentary is tackling a very relevant topic and amid fears that binge drinking is ruining the so-called ‘golden’ generation I feel this in-depth analysis into the cause and the solutions of under-age drinking will draw in many more audience members than I dare to anticipate. This style of documentary is one which will draw in people from all works of life, from the ordinary ‘housewife’ to the well established lawyers and perhaps even the prime minister himself.

Alcohol-related subjects are a consistent prime-time hit, with concerned parents around to witness what their own kids may be up to when they are outside in the public. Local councils and youth advice teams will take special attention to the methods my documentary will say in which will help teenagers to realise that alcohol is not the way forward in terms of achieving popularity and achieving promotion in the much desired social hierarchy. "

StoryBoard - Under Age and Under Pressure

When planning any form of media, it is always good to have some form of storyboard in place so you can practically visualize your plans. I planned out six separate scenes, with details on lighting, sound, camera angles and movements and what was to be happening within the scene. However, as with the majority of documentaries, everything is practically filmed live, and there can be no promises on being able to shoot exactly what you need and how you need it. However i feel my documentary practically gathered the gist of what was in my story board.

Synopsis for Under Age and Under Pressure

After much deliberation i finally decided that i really wanted to create something different to what the rest of the class were producing. Hence, i began my planning for my documentary, which was going to highlight the dangers, risks yet astoundingly common, Under age drinking.

After looking at my brief:

7. An extract from a new documentary tv programme, lasting approximately five minutes, together with two of the following three options:

•A radio trailer for the documentary.

•A double page spread from a listings magazine focused on the documentary.

•A newspaper advertisement for the documentary.

I decided that it was best to begin my preparation for such a large project almost immediately. This was my synopsis.

"The title of my documentary is going to be called “Underage and Under Pressure”, a documentary highlighting today's new-age of young binge drinkers and what drives them to think alcohol makes them more ‘socially acceptable’. I am hoping that my documentary will highlight how young people start with drinking in streets, to house parties and then onto pubs and clubs. In my documentary I will hope to show how easy it is to get into clubs and pubs without any id. I also hope to include how this problem has always been around, but just on a much more un-documented and smaller scale and how landlords combated this in the past. Also I would like to get an interview with a past/present pub landlord, fellow underage drinkers and hopefully a figure of authority.

I plan to do the majority of my documentary in the streets of Dartford and Dartford town center amongst my interviews which will take place in separate settings. However, I also plan to create a newspaper advertisement and a radio trailer for the documentary, in which I hope to include either pictures or quotes from the sound over to entice the target audience into watching my documentary. To create my radio trailer I will use the Radio Broadcast room to record my original choice sound over, however I will then transfer this to the computer and edit it, adding special effects sounds and adding quotes from my documentary. The newspaper advertisement I will create on Photoshop. "

I feel that my documentary did mainly follow the majority of this early planning, with slight changes and substitutions to the plan occurring along the way.
